Planning Your Trip to Mexico

If you’re planning on taking a trip to Mexico, then there are a few definite excursions you will want included on your itinerary. It’s an incredibly rich and exciting country.

Mexico is made up of several distinct regions. In the north, there is Baja California, a peninsula that borders California in the US. The northern expanse of Mexico that borders the rest of the US is a vast mountainous and desert area and doesn’t contain much worth exploring unless you’re looking for a unique wilderness experience.

The Bajio is a central collection of states with a long history. This area is famous for its silver mines. The central area is the main hub of activity in Mexico. Alongside this is the lush pacific coast, with some of the world’s best beaches. In the south is the Yucatan Peninsula, where most of Mexico’s archaeological and historic sites are. This region is also home to the Mexican jungle and the beautiful Caribbean coast.

No visit will be complete without experiencing Mexico City, the largest city in North America. Many visitors to the city have talked about being staggered by its sheer size. If you can, try and organize your visit so that it coincides with one of the many festivals or events that are held there yearly. The Independence Parade and Day of the Dead are intriguing spectacles not to be missed. You should also make sure that you don’t miss seeing the Templo Mayor, which was the main temple of the Aztecs.

The other must-see sites are the collection of ruins of ancient civilizations. Over the course of tis history Mexico has been home to the Aztecs, Maya and the Olmecs (amongst others). You can visit lost cities and temples and there are literally hundreds to choose from.

It’s also worth visiting the so-called Mexican Caribbean, Quinatan Roo. Roo is a state in Mexico with a shoreline along the Caribbean and has recently developed into a major tourist destination. One of the most beautiful cities in this new and upcoming area is Cancun, which can be translated into, “The Golden Snake.” Peak season tends to begin around December and run until the end of April, so it’s best to avoid these periods if you’re looking for a cheaper holiday. There’s lots of well-priced Cancun hotels to choose from, so that needn’t be a worry.

Finally, when you’re planning your Mexican adventure, bear in mind that it is a country that hosts some of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. There is a diverse and exciting natural world that remains wild and untouched even to this day. It has the world’s second largest coral reef and its seas are home to some of the world’s biggest whale sharks, especially in the Baja region. Michoacan and Oaxaca are renowned for their rich bird and butterfly habitats. There are also numerous hiking opportunities for the avid walker!

When planning your trip it’s always worth joining a few good forums. There are also numerous other hotel discussion sites. These can be invaluable sources of up-to-date information for regular travellers.
