Victoria General Hospital Emergency Department

Vancouver Island

As in many areas of our growing province, southern Vancouver Island’s burgeoning population was putting excessive demands on Victoria General Hospital’s emergency department. A facility built nearly a quarter of a century ago and intended to serve 10,000 visits per year was struggling to deal with 36,000 visits by 2007.

That’s why a new $18.8 million state-of-the-art emergency department is under construction for Victoria General, a facility that is expected to be completed by the end of 2009. The new emergency department will have more patient treatment spaces, be laid out in a more patient-centred way, and provide increased privacy and a better working environment for health care professionals.

The new emergency department at Victoria General Hospital will be triple the size of the current facility and includes specialized areas for children and improved waiting areas, while also reducing the spread of infections.

A new emergency department at Victoria General Hospital will meet future needs, providing better care to patients and strengthening the hospital’s role as Vancouver Island’s only trauma centre.
