Nanaimo Airport
Vancouver Island

Expanding Nanaimo Airport is all about creating new economic opportunities on central Vancouver Island. Attracting tourism and new business to Nanaimo and the entire region depends on having a quality transportation system, so upgrading the airport makes a lot of sense.
The project includes extending the airport’s runway by 480 metres. This will allow larger planes to use Nanaimo Airport. In addition, high-intensity runway lighting and improved navigational instruments will allow aircraft to land in inclement weather.
This is all part of a three-phase decade-long airport expansion and upgrade that also includes everything from road and parking improvements to a terminal building expansion, enhancements to emergency response vehicles and taxiway/apron improvements. A Mustel Group survey found that 87 per cent of local residents supported airport expansion.
The result will be an airport better able to handle modern demands, opening the door to economic opportunity by increasing safety and reliability and enabling the airport to link with more destinations in Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. This means more options for local residents and increased economic activity for the central island and all of British Columbia.
