Kicking Horse Canyon Park Bridge

Kootenays

A magnificent engineering accomplishment, the Park Bridge links British Columbia to Canada and beyond. Located just east of Golden as the Trans Canada Highway makes its journey through the Rocky Mountains, Kicking Horse Canyon has some of Canada’s most breathtaking scenery. It also presents huge engineering challenges to highway builders.

Park Bridge is part of the first major upgrading of this section of highway since it was built in the 1950s. This vital roadway carries 10,000 vehicles daily during the summer, and nearly a quarter of all vehicles are heavy trucks. For many years, the old highway was a source of major safety concerns.

The new bridge is part of the answer to those concerns, and its rapid construction - progressing from first blueprints to final completion in just five years - is almost as amazing as the spectacular bridge. The 405 metre bridge rises 90 metres from the canyon floor, with the highest piers of any steel girder bridge in the province.

Completed 21 months ahead of schedule, Kicking Horse Canyon Park Bridge boosts commerce throughout B.C. while improving highway safety. It’s the product of ingenuity, hard work and commitment to B.C.’s bright future.
