Genome British Columbia
Vancouver Coast and Mountains

We hear about genetic research discoveries almost every day, and we know it’s important. Yet many of us don’t know what genomics is, what difference it can make in our lives, or that British Columbia is a world leader in this vital field that affects health care, the environment and key areas of our economy such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, mining and bio-energy.
Genomics is research that looks at the DNA of many different organisms and tries to increase our understanding for the benefit of health care, agriculture, high technology and many other fields.
Much of the world’s most important research starts with genomics. Genome British Columbia works with all levels of government, universities and industry, as a catalyst for B.C.’s leading industries.
The B.C. government has supported Genome BC through $152.5 million in funding since 2001. Combined with several times that amount in national and international funding, this allows major research to go ahead right here in B.C. into key issues such as early-stage cancer, emerging infectious diseases and the mountain pine beetle infestation.
